Attention taxpayers! Income Tax Department shares steps to fix ITR e-filing portal access issues

The Income Tax Department has addressed growing concerns from taxpayers facing difficulties in accessing the ITR e-filing portal. With the September 15 deadline for filing returns without penalty approaching, the department issued a list of simple troubleshooting steps to help users resolve the problem.

According to the department, access issues may often arise due to local system or browser settings rather than any problem with the portal itself. In an advisory shared on its official X handle, the department recommended users delete temporary files, clear browser cache and cookies, try supported browsers like Chrome or Edge, or open the portal in incognito mode. Disabling extensions such as ad-blockers, updating browsers, or switching to a different internet network can also fix most errors.

Officials assured that following these steps generally resolves local access-related difficulties. For unresolved issues, taxpayers can contact the helpdesk or email their details, including PAN and mobile number, to orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in.

Meanwhile, the department confirmed that over 7 crore ITRs have already been filed so far for the Assessment Year 2025-26. The deadline was earlier extended from July 31 to September 15 due to structural and content revisions in the ITR forms and related utilities.

Despite this, many taxpayers and chartered accountants have reported trouble while making tax payments and downloading the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS). The department clarified that the AIS/TIS facility is functioning normally and advised users to retry or share their details at cmcpc_support@insight.gov.in if the problem continues.

For AY 2024-25, more than 7.28 crore returns were filed by July 31, 2024, showing a steady rise in compliance compared to 6.77 crore returns in the previous year. The department expects the numbers to grow further this year as the September 15 deadline nears.
