The car sales battle in India is heating up again! Hyundai Motor India has reclaimed the second spot in monthly sales for August 2025, pushing Tata Motors to third and Mahindra to fourth. The fight for the runner-up position behind Maruti Suzuki has been neck-and-neck for months, but this time Hyundai pulled ahead.
Hyundai Back in Second Place
According to the sales data, Hyundai Motor India sold 44,001 units in August, bouncing back strongly. Tata Motors wasn’t too far behind with 41,001 units, while Mahindra clocked 39,399 units.
YoY Sales Decline Across All Three
Despite the ranking shuffle, all three automakers saw a year-on-year dip:
- Hyundai: 44,001 units vs 49,525 units in August 2024 (-11.1%)
- Tata Motors: 41,001 units vs 44,142 units (-7.1%)
- Mahindra: 39,399 units vs 43,277 units (-9%)
Maruti Suzuki Still the Market Leader
Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate India’s car market by a huge margin. The company sold 1,80,683 units in August 2025, only a slight dip from 1,81,782 units in the same month last year. In the domestic passenger vehicle market, sales stood at 1,31,278 units, down from 1,43,075 units in August 2024.
The Bigger Picture
The tussle for second place between Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra has become one of the most interesting battles in India’s auto industry. With demand patterns shifting, new launches, and the push for alternative fuels, the competition is expected to remain tight in the coming months.
